Decorating the Christmas tree is a festive highlight for many, but it can also be a source of great frustration. The peaceful joy of hanging baubles can quickly turn into annoyance when it comes to the lights. If you find this task challenging, you might be doing it 'wrong'.

Lights are an essential part of any Christmas tree, but distributing them evenly without tangling can be tricky, especially if you're decorating solo. Many believe the best method is to coil the wire around the tree for an even spread of lights. However, Christmas tree decorator Tara, who owns a tree decorating business, says this method is incorrect and there's a simpler way.

In a TikTok video on her account @holidayhangups, she explains that the 'zig-zag' method saves time compared to the 'coiling method', which often wastes lights at the back of the tree. This method also makes it easier to remove the lights, according to the online content creator. Tara then demonstrated the "game-changing" method, which involves hanging the lights from the top to the bottom of the tree. She started by hanging the lights from the left side of the top of the Christmas tree, and feeding the wire all the way down to the bottom in a straight line, before attaching it to the bottom branch. Then she brought the wire to the top again.

In a zig-zag motion, she repeated it until the lights were lined up all the way across the tree. In the caption, she wrote: "The most controversial thing I've ever said! Don't go around and around your tree putting your lights on. Put them on top to bottom in a zig zag pattern.

"When I posted this tip a few years ago, I quickly realised people have some strong feelings about their Christmas lights and how they put them on their trees. Well, I said what I said. You should put your lights on your tree from top to bottom, not around and around your tree.

It's just that much easier!" Another woman claimed you should try putting lights up the trunk of your tree to make it "extra bright". Kelly, who also uploaded a video to TIkTok, shared how she started from the bottom and worked her way up the core of the tree. Once she reached the top, she took another string of lights for the branches.
