Vadodara: In a tragic accident, a 23-year-old youth drowned and his friend narrowly escaped when a car they were travelling in fell into a pond in the Laxmipura area of the city. It is believed that the youth lost control of the car as he pressed the accelerator instead of the brake. The incident took place at around 12:25 am on Saturday when the youths were returning from a café on Ankodiya Road.
The deceased, Ketan Prajapati, a resident of Karmajyot Society in Gotri, was driving a friend's SUV while going home. His friend sitting in the same SUV managed to escape before it sank. A group of friends from the Gotri, Laxmipura, and nearby areas gathered for dinner at a restaurant on Gotri-Vasna Road.
After dinner, two youths, Jay Chaudhary and Pratham Choksi, went to get Pratham's Hyundai Creta SUV from his residence. The group then gathered at a café on Ankodiya Road. From there, they went to the Yash Complex crossroads on Gotri Road to have tea.
The group returned to the café again but left soon as it was closing down. Prajapati wanted to drive the SUV, and his friend, Niraj Chosla, sat with him in the SUV, while four other friends, including Pratham and Jay, were riding on two motorcycles. Chosla stated in an offence registered at the Laxmipura police station that he was on his phone and realised that the car was speeding.
Chosla quickly straightened the backrest of his seat upon realising this. According to Chosla, Prajapati pressed the accelerator pedal instead of the brake when the road ended near the pond. The speeding SUV fell into the pond and started sinking.
Prajapati was not able to swim and drowned with the car while Chosla managed to swam out. Prajapati's body was brought out of the car by the fire brigade. Stay updated with the latest news on Times of India .
