Today I received yet another text message from an unknown source stating that a U.S. Postal Service package was in the warehouse and could not be delivered due to an invalid ZIP code.
The message directed me to a web link that, if opened, would lead to an internet page where the ZIP code could be verified. I should add this is not the first such text to come my way, and a few weeks ago I did some online research to verify their authenticity after suspecting that USPS was likely not the source of the messages. What I discovered was a widespread consumer fraud triggered by merely clicking on the link in a text or email.
