Hight numbers of drivers dread the prospect of driving in bad weather so much that they often refuse to take the wheel. The survey, conducted for Isuzu, reveals that almost three-quarters (73pc) of motorists feel so worried or anxious about driving in wintry, icy or cold conditions that they often, or on the odd occasion, refuse to drive at all. And it might come as a surprise that the survey found that the younger generation of motorists outnumber all other age groups on that score.

More than eight in 10 (83pc) aged between 18 and 29 have refused to get behind the wheel in poor conditions, compared with just 62pc of those aged 60 or over. The research is timely given the poor weather outlook for the coming period. The top five conditions drivers deem challenging during the winter are: the risk of ice (60pc); freezing rain/snow reducing visibility (48pc); low sun shining in your face (43pc); getting stuck in the snow (40pc); and fog (39pc).
