Rapper Young Thug received a complex 40-year sentence Thursday that could lead to his immediate release, putting a pin in Georgia's longest criminal trial. Judge Paige Whitaker structured the sentence to include time served plus 15 years of probation, with a suspended 20-year prison term that would only be imposed if probation terms are violated. The rapper, born Jeffery Lamar Williams, has spent over 900 days in custody since his May 2022 arrest.

Katy Perry's new music video for Woman's World leaves her fans divided Hollywood actress calls out Katy Perry for working with ‘abhorrent’ Dr. Luke "I take full responsibility for my crimes, for my charges," Williams told the court, describing himself as "a good guy with a good heart" who got involved "in a lot of stuff because I was just nice or cool." The sentence includes strict conditions: 100 hours of community service, no contact with gang members or co-defendants, and a 10-year ban from metropolitan Atlanta except for special circumstances.

Williams must also conduct quarterly anti-gang and anti-gun presentations. The case against Williams and 27 associates at his Young Stoner Life (YSL) Records label alleged the organization was actually a criminal gang called Young Slime Life, responsible for "75 to 80% of violent crime" in Atlanta. The trial faced multiple setbacks, including Judge Ural Glanville's recusal over misconduct allegations, defense attorney Brian Steel's contempt charge, and security breaches including a deputy's arrest for alleged contraband smuggling and a court Zoom hack by a supporter shouting "free Thug!" Defense attorney Brian Steel requested that Young Thug maintain permission to associate with co-defendants, including his brother Quantavious "Unfoonk" Grier and Sergio "Gunna" Kitchens, to continue his music career. Young Thug's sentence represents a significant departure from the state's recommendation of a minimum 25-year prison term. Only two defendants, Shannon Stillwell and Deamonte Kendrick, remain to face trial after three others accepted plea deals this week.

The hearing took place on Halloween 2024, two years after his 2022 hearing..
