A North Wales Member of the Senedd recently joined a team of young footballers at a community festival in Wrexham. The Festival of Football, hosted by SP Energy Networks and Wrexham AFC, took place at the Wrexham University astroturf pitch and welcomed 100 Year 3 girls from local primary schools. Sam Rowlands, Welsh Conservative MS for the region, said it was “fantastic to see so many girls enjoying football.
” “I am always happy to see children getting involved in sport and I was delighted to accept the invitation to support this great initiative,” he said. “It was fantastic to see so many girls enjoying their football and to have the opportunity to talk to those taking part in the fun and interactive games. “Football is of course a hot topic in Wrexham at the moment as the local team is riding high in the league with another chance of being promoted again.
“It was a pleasure to get involved and meet up with organisers and Wrexham players.” The festival marked the renewal of SP Energy Networks’ partnership with the Wrexham AFC community team. The collaboration aims to deliver high-quality football coaching to more than 1,000 young girls across North Wales.
As part of the day’s activities, pupils also learned about electrical safety and careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). A representative from SP Energy Networks, alongside a female Wrexham player, highlighted the opportunities available for women in these fields. Players from Wrexham’s first teams were also in attendance to support the event.
