The warning area covers Strathclyde and the couth of Scotland as well as parts of Northern Ireland, Wales and the Irish Sea. The stormy weather is expected to last from 3pm on Tuesday, December 17, until 8am on Wednesday, December 18. Southerly winds gusting to almost 50 miles per hour are expected on Tuesday evening, rising to slightly more than 50mph in the early hours of Wednesday before easing off slightly during the morning.
The Met Office has provided several advice points to members of the public. Southerly winds will strengthen through Tuesday afternoon, evening and night, with gales developing along some exposed coasts. Peak gusts of 40-50mph are likely fairly widely inland, with perhaps 50-60mph in more exposed places, including along some coasts.
The winds may lead to some disruption to ferry crossings, with tricky travelling conditions possible on higher level and west-east routes. A Met Office spokesperson said: "Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary. "If you are on the coast, stay safe during stormy weather by being aware of large waves.
Even from the shore large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea. Take care if walking near cliffs; know your route and keep dogs on a lead.".
