Watch as New York Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres is awarded a ground-rule double after a fan interfered with his deep shot to the outfield in Game 1 of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. With Game 1 of the World Series tied in the top of the ninth Friday, it looked like Gleyber Torres had given the New York Yankees the lead — but only for a moment. The Yankees second baseman drove a Michael Kopech offering to the wall in left, but a Los Angeles Dodgers fan reached into the field of play and pulled the ball into the stands.
Dodgers left fielder Teoscar Hernández and several other Los Angeles players immediately reacted, pointing to the fan to indicate that the ball was, in fact, not a home run. Umpires immediately called fan interference and convened to discuss the ruling. After a chief review, the call ultimately stood.
Torres was awarded a double after the call. With two outs in the inning, the Dodgers intentionally walked Juan Soto and brought in closer Blake Treinen to face Aaron Judge. L.
A.’s right-hander got the job done, retiring Judge on a high fastball, forcing the AL MVP favourite to fly out to centre. This isn’t the first time the Yankees have been at the centre of first-row fan drama, of course, as Derek Jeter may or may not have gotten a little help from Jeffrey Maier on a game-tying homer in Game 1 of the 1996 ALCS against the Baltimore Orioles.
New York went on to win that Championship Series in five games before besting the Atlanta Braves in the World Series.
