A WREXHAM mum was one of the first pregnant women in North Wales to receive a new vaccine to protect against RSV infection. Health Board teams have been busy giving out the first vaccines offering protection against RSV to pregnant women in the region. Hayley Jones, from Acrefair, is 39 weeks pregnant and was one of the first women to have the vaccine last week.
Having the vaccine will help to reduce the risk of Hayley’s baby getting a severe RSV infection. TOP STORIES TODAY Hayley, who pictured above with son Ollie after having her vaccine at the Plas Gororau vaccination centre in Wrexham, said: “I feel quite strongly about vaccines – I think they are important.” We are inviting women who are 28 or more weeks pregnant to attend one of our vaccination clinics to boost their baby’s protection against RSV.
More than 1000 young babies are admitted to hospital in Wales as a result of RSV each year. Trials show the new vaccine offers excellent protection against severe illness. From this month, the RSV vaccine will also be offered to older people aged 75 to 80 (born between September 2 1944 and September 1 1949 inclusive only).
