LA CROSSE — Before last year, no team from the small school division at the Bi-State Classic had ever captured the team title. That is now a thing of the past. ADVERTISEMENT For the second consecutive season, the Chatfield High School wrestling team has captured the team title.
Led by a first-place finish from freshman Jameson Priebe, the Gophers finished with 257 points — well ahead of Evansville (Wis.) and Holmen (Wis.), which each finished with 214 points — to place first out of 70 teams at the prestigious tournament on Saturday at the La Crosse Center in La Crosse.
Priebe — ranked No. 1 at 107 in Class 1A by the Guillotine — knocked off West Salem/Bangor (Wis.) junior Teghan Moore by a 11-1 major decision to claim the title.
In addition to the freshman Priebe's title, the Gophers also had defending state champion Carson Rowland (157) place second and 2023 state champion Javier Berg (120) place third. Senior Ayden Miner (165) placed fifth, while Alden Pearson (144) finished seventh as well for the Gophers. Rowland fell in the finals by tech.
fall to Evansville (Wis.) High School senior Danny Heiser — a two-time defending state champion and University of Missouri commit. Javier Berg dropped a semifinal to Holmen freshman Nathan Henderson, before bouncing back with a 5-4 win by decision in the third place match.
Overall, it was a solid day for southeastern Minnesota. ADVERTISEMENT Led by a second place finish from sophomore Sam Moore (113) and a fifth place finish from sophomore Carl Murray (106), Zumbrota-Mazeppa placed 16th as a team with 152 points. Cannon Falls' sophomore Adam Parish placed third at 126, while Goodhue junior Jack Carlson (285) and senior Caleb Kurtti (215) placed fourth and seventh, respectively.
Full results Over on the girls side of the bracket, Zumbrota-Mazeppa sophomore Macy Schaefer placed second at 107. Schaefer collected a pair of pins, a tech fall and a 7-2 win by decision, before she was pinned in the finals by Marshfield (Wis.) and defending state champion Ava Gardner in the finals.
Meanwhile, the Chatfield High School girls wrestling team placed 12th out of 76 teams. Junior Emily Bova (100) and eighth-grader Kendyl Notle (152) each placed seventh, while junior Brynn Horsman (120) placed ninth to lead the Gophers. ADVERTISEMENT Full results.
