Worldwide research conducted by Researchscape and Western Digital found that 87% of all consumers across the globe backup their data either manually or automatically. The main reasons are fear of losing data (83%), decluttering device storage (67%), and prevention against cyber threats (42%). India leads the way in daily data backups.

30% of Indian consumers back up data every day, followed by the US (27%) and the UK (23%). This shows growing digital security awareness among Indian users. External hard drives continue to be a preferred backup option in India, with 54% of consumers opting for them.

Thus, ranking the country second in the world after France (59%). Mr. Sandeep Bhambure, Vice President and Managing Director, India & SAARC, Veeam Software, weighs in on the issue, "The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre reported losses of Rs 11,333 crore due to cyber fraud in the first 9 months of 2024.

This is a clarion call for businesses to look beyond conventional data backup mechanisms and adopt comprehensive data resilience strategies. World Backup Day is an important reminder in this context. Data backup now is no longer just about copying files; it’s an integral part of an organization’s cybersecurity infrastructure.

Implementing immutable backups, automated threat detection, and rapid recovery processes are essential to ensure data remains safe and recoverable in the event of a cyberattack. Moreover, businesses need to test recovery processes regularly and ensure proper orchestration for effective data restoration.” Bhambure further explained the data security framework.

He stated, “ The Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDPA), which came into effect in August 2023 also emphasizes the growing importance of data resilience and the Government of India’s commitment to enhancing data security frameworks. This regulatory framework will enable Indian businesses to align with global standards and ensure business continuity.” Despite a good backup program , 28% of Indian users lack backups, sticking only to device hardware.

This is the second-largest percentage in the world. The 3-2-1 backup rule for strong data protection, which Western Digital suggests, goes like this: 3 copies of data 2 different storage devices 1 offsite copy stored (e.g.

, cloud computing) Cloud storage is used widely, with 77% of Indian respondents using the cloud to store data. However, 35% of worldwide users regard cloud storage as too costly, leading to a move toward hybrid solutions. India also leads the way in Network Attached Storage (NAS) usage, with 22% of users using NAS, the most in the world.

The research polled 6,118 respondents in 10 countries from February 7 to 25, 2025. The study focuses on the growing demand for secure and affordable backup measures to avoid data loss and improve online security..
