But in 1943, paediatric psychiatrist Dr Leo Kanner separated autism as a distinct social and emotional disorder. Afterwards, in 1944, autism was formally described as a disorder, and research into it was increased.
The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) designated World Autism Awareness Day in 2007 with the aim of raising global awareness about autism. Since then, April 2 is officially celebrated as World Autism Awareness Day to inspire countries all across the world to support families and people suffering from autism. Significance Of World Autism Awareness Day: Autism is a lifelong developmental condition that impacts one's communication and social interaction skills.
While a few people with autism can live independently, some may need to be supported for the rest of their lives. It is very important to celebrate this day as a means of advocating for improved policies, medical care, and educational opportunities for all individuals with autism. By raising awareness, societies are able to strive to provide equal opportunity and dispel stereotypes regarding autism.
Governments and organisations across the globe organise events, forums, and campaigns to raise awareness and bring autistic people support. Theme Of World Autism Awareness Day 2025: This year, the United Nations commemorates World Autism Awareness Day with the theme "Advancing Neurodiversity and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)." The theme is intended to bring out the need to develop inclusive policy and practice for people with autism that complements the larger goal of sustainable development.
In 2025, the emphasis lies in creating equal opportunities for autistic people to access education, health care, and work, making society more inclusive. Everywhere, events, forums, and campaigns will be organised to push for neurodiversity and lobby for policy reforms that support autistic people. Causes Of Autism: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a multifactorial condition with no single known aetiology.
Genetic and environmental factors are, however, thought to play a major role. Certain children inherit genetic disorders like Rett syndrome or Fragile X syndrome, which are linked to autism. Complications during pregnancy, use of certain drugs, viral infections, and other environmental factors can also raise the risk of developing ASD.
