Waterstones will move into the large Eastgate Shopping Centre space at the end of April, with company bosses and councillors hoping the store will bring a “renewed sense of community” to the town centre. The opening will be a return for the bookseller following the closure of its previous Basildon store more than a decade ago. Dave Sheldrake, retail manager at Waterstones, said: “We are absolutely delighted to be opening a bookshop in Basildon.

“At Waterstones, we pride ourselves on being at the heart of the community and our booksellers will always be on hand to make recommendations for books and gifts. “We are passionate about helping our customers of all ages discover a new favourite read. From children’s picture books to the latest non-fiction releases, our tables and shelves will offer something for all tastes.

“We can’t wait to open our doors and to welcome the book lovers of Basildon into our beautiful new shop.” Following the closure of the retailer’s main Basildon store more than a decade ago, a smaller outlet was set up in the Eastgate’s HMV for a short while. The Eastgate’s Waterstones is currently being fitted into a unit previously housing a Superdry store.

The fashion retailer announced its decision to close its Basildon store at the start of March, sparking sadness and nostalgia among Basildon residents. Labour’s Deputy Mayor of Basildon, Victoria Joseph, welcomed the progression of work at the new Waterstones store. She said: “It’s great to see Waterstones coming to Eastgate – this is exactly the kind of investment our town centre needs.

“A good bookshop isn’t just about selling book, it’s a space for the community, for learning, and for bringing people together. “I know many residents will be pleased to have a proper bookshop on their doorstep, and hopefully, it encourages more footfall and activity in the area. It’s a really positive addition, and I’m looking forward to seeing it open”.
