Surat: A diamond worker allegedly stole 2,446 diamonds worth Rs 11 lakh from the unit where he worked. The accused, Akash Shakya, stayed at the unit along with another worker. According to a police complaint by Jignesh Vaghasiya, he owns a diamond unit in Snehmudra Society in Kapodra.

He has 16 artisans working at the unit and two of them, Akash Shakya and Jalim Singh, stayed at the unit. On Saturday morning, when Vaghasiya opened the unit after the Dhuleti festival, he found that 2,446 diamonds worth Rs 11 lakh were missing from the safe. When Vaghasiya enquired about it with his father, Tulsibhai, the latter came to the unit and expressed his ignorance about the diamonds.

The workers present at the unit also told Vaghasiya that they did not know anything about the missing diamonds. As Shakya, a native of Madhya Pradesh, was not present at the unit, Vaghasiya called him. However, his numbers were not reachable.

As Shakya did not inform the owner about his leave, his suspicion about him grew. In the meantime, Tulsibhai told his son that he had taken Shakya'ss help 10 days earlier. As Tulsibhai has eyesight issues, he asked Shakya to open the mobile flashlight so that he could apply a code on the safe.

"At that time, Shakya might have remembered the code of the safe," Vaghasiya said in the complaint. In the following days, Shakya stole the key from Tulsibhai. On the Dhuleti day, when others were on leave, Shakya applied the code he had remembered and used the key he had stolen to open the safe.

Vaghasiya's complaint says Shakya stole the diamonds this way and fled. The safe can be opened only when the code and the key are applied in combination. Kapodra police booked Shakya for theft and started an investigation.
