Work is well underway on a new city centre bakery. Cornish Bakehouse is due to open in the former Virgin Money unit in North Street, Brighton. The chain, which sells Cornish pasties, sandwiches, jacket potatoes and more, will be the company's first store in Sussex.

Plans were submitted to Brighton and Hove City Council for the site back in January. In the application, plans stated that there would be “minor works” to the existing shopfront. It said: “The application’s design and access statement said: “The proposal is in keeping with the existing building and other shuttered entrances within the local vicinity on North Street.

“The proposed roller shutter is limited to the entrance only and the larger glazed areas of the shop front will remain open as existing with views into the store retained out of hours. The shutter box will be fully hidden within the existing internal bulkhead boxing with the shutter itself located in the position of the existing door.” Images show new signage that has been installed on the stores front.

The Virgin Money site closed in November 2023 . It was one of 39 branches across the country to shut. At the time, Virgin Money said it “regularly reviews” the way customers use its stores as well as online channels so it can “adapt its services to meet changing customer demand”.

An opening date for the store has not yet been confirmed..
