'Wordle' #1,169 Answer, Clues and Hints for Saturday, August 31 Puzzle

The entire "Wordle" archive is now available to play, if you fancy more than one word puzzle a day.

was invented by a Welsh-born engineer by the name of . He came up with the daily puzzle, whose name is a play on his surname, for his girlfriend who loves playing word games. Wardle decided to make the game public in 2021 at the height of the coronavirus pandemic, and within weeks it had amassed hundreds of thousands of players.

He eventually sold the game to in early 2022, and it recently released the entire archive to its subscribers, making more than 1,000 past games available to play. "We are thrilled to unlock the official archive for our subscribers," Jonathan Knight, head of games at , said in May. "This expansion is not just about playing past puzzles; it's about deepening the connection our community has with and with each other.



" Part of appeal lies in its simplicity. Players need to figure out a mystery five-letter word in six guesses or fewer. They are guided by a color-coded tile system to let them know if they are on the right track.

A green tile means the letter is correct, while yellow tells you the letter appears in the word, but is in the wrong spot. A gray tile shows that the letter does not appear in the word at all. Wardle told why he landed on a five-letter word as the sweet spot for the game.

"There is a reason that every word is five letters long and that you are allowed six attempts to guess it," he said in an interview . "That might seem arbitrary but, with the prototype version, I tested different word lengths and experimented with the number of tries that players were allowed."
