Howe will not be at St James' Park as his side attempt to strengthen their hopes of Champions League qualification after he was admitted to hospital on Friday because of an illness. The Newcastle head coach did not conduct his usual pre-match press conference on Friday, with Jason Tindall standing in, and while the Magpies number two suggested Howe would be back for the game, that has not proved to be the case. As a result, a large number of supporters have suggested that the Wor Flags group should modify their planned pre-match banner and flag display in order to show support for Howe.
However, with a planned tribute to former Newcastle boss Kevin Keegan already having been prepared and paid for, the group feel it is too late to make major changes. A statement issued by Wor Flags on Sunday morning said: "We appreciate the messages we’ve received since yesterday evening regarding today’s display. "Hundreds of hours have gone into creating it, and in the short time frame there’s no way we can pull it, it would also mean so much wasted material that fans have paid for.

"King Kev set the standards for Newcastle United as both player and manager, and today we pay homage to the legend. We’re sure Eddie Howe would agree that a massive atmosphere is needed throughout the 90.
" Newcastle issued a statement of their own on Saturday evening confirming that Howe will not be on the touchline for the Manchester United game. The Magpies' statement said: "Eddie Howe will miss Newcastle United’s Premier League game against Manchester United on Sunday due to illness. "The Magpies’ head coach was admitted to hospital late on Friday evening having felt unwell for a number of days.
Medical staff kept Eddie in hospital overnight for further tests, which are ongoing. "He is conscious and talking with his family, and is continuing to receive expert medical care. Everyone at Newcastle United extends their best wishes to Eddie for a speedy recovery, and further updates will follow in due course.
"Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones will lead the team at St. James’ Park on Sunday, supported by the club‘s first team staff.".
