The closure will take place from Monday, April 14 to Monday, June 23 between Loddon Bridge Road and Rivermead Road on Colemansmoor Road. During this time SGN will replace old metal pipework with a more durable plastic that’s expected to last 80 years. According to neighbours the works have created a large hole that has now been dug in the centre of the road to conduct work on the old metal pipework.
This means that there is no space for traffic to swerve past if they do enter the construction area. Wokingham Borough Council has advised drivers of works and diversions during the gas main replacement. The authority said: “Traffic will be diverted via Loddon Bridge Road and Vauxhall Drive during closures, which are due to be in place until 23 June.
” According to residents the ‘road closed’ sign has been placed around Colemansmoor Lane despite the road closure and works reportedly starting from Rivermead Road. Although we are mere days into the closure, residents have already seen a number of cars that have attempted to drive around the sign which states that the road is closed for the next two months. One shocked neighbour has said that he has witnessed a large lorry reverse back out of the road after discovering the works.
This is despite the sign which clearly indicates that the road is closed. Other people have said that the reason that drivers are ignoring the sign is because of past experiences where signage has been left up whilst the road is open. This road closure joins numerous across Berkshire and the South East as works begin to improve the gas network for customers.
Although vehicles are not permitted down this road, SGN has put a pedestrian walkway in place to make the area accessible for those that live and walk on Colemansmoor Road. SGN look after more than 74,000 kilometres of pipes across our network. To make sure the pipes deliver gas safely and reliably means that they need to upgrade or repair them at times.
A spokesperson for SGN said: “We know that roadworks can be frustrating, but our essential work keeps you, your family and local community safe.”.
