Wood Fired Wonders, 27 W. College St. in Oberlin, puts a unique twist on American favorites with wood-fired flavors.
Since July 2024, the restaurant has provided the community with quality dishes containing fresh ingredients and hand-crafted seasonings, dressings and more, according to co-owner and head chef Mario Johnson of the family operated eatery. “We mix art, passion and love into everything we make,” Johnson said. “I want people to experience our love of food, and do a happy dance after taking one single bite.
” Co-owner Derek Tyree said he and Johnson replicated their love for wood-fired food from a previous wood-fired pizza business. Tyree said wood-fired food adds a different flavor element not present in other methods of cooking. “We really like wood-fired,” he said.
“The flavor that wood-fired food brings ...
we thought bringing that out here to Oberlin would be something people would enjoy.” Menu options include Atlantic salmon, the novel shrimp and scallops kabob and a smoky garlic steak. “We’ve created new flavors with a unique blend of spices and ingredients, including five different smoked peppercorns and three smoked sea salts,” Johnson said.
“But, we make sure that seasonings don’t overwhelm the main protein or vegetable.” Johnson and Tyree spent months testing ingredients and dishes to compose a menu, while locally sourcing many ingredients like meat and honey. Johnson said the duo is very detail-oriented in creating “presentable plates” for them and the standards of their customers.
“We’ve created a lot of things — our seasonings, dressings,” he said. “We try our best to pay attention to every little detail. “The menu is super impressive in just offering a wide range of delicious options that cater to everyone’s taste.
” Detail oriented, Johnson said the restaurant is conscious in using recyclable material. The community has embraced the restaurant with its take on well-known food, he said. People have been inquiring about the business since the owners renovated the space, Johnson said.
“I do think that we are on the right track, and we’ve done a good job so far,” Tyree said. “I do think we are accomplishing what we set out to do by bringing different flavors to our community.” For more information, visit woodfiredwondersob.
