Women have called on policymakers, financial institutions, and industry leaders to create more opportunities for females to thrive in the maritime and energy sectors as the country continues its drive to expand capabilities for economic growth. Their call is coming at a time when global maritime communities are increasingly advocating for gender diversity in the sector through inclusive policies for economic growth and improved operational efficiency. Speaking at the fourth Women in Maritime and Energy (WIME) Awards, the Chairperson of the Advisory Board, Dr Chizoba Anyika, emphasised the importance of collaboration and called on all stakeholders to contribute towards a more inclusive industry where women take on more leadership roles.

Anyika urged organisations and policymakers to translate commitments into tangible actions that foster gender inclusivity and professional growth in maritime and energy. “Our goal is to build stronger networks, create more mentorship opportunities, and push for policies that truly support women in maritime and energy. We want to work with organisations, industry leaders, and policymakers who are ready to take action—not just in words, but in meaningful commitments,” Anyika stated.

She reaffirmed her belief that the future of the maritime and energy industries is increasingly female, with women positioned to lead and make substantial contributions to the sector’s growth. Anyika stated that the WIME Awards continue to serve as a beacon of empowerment, encouraging more women to step forward and take their rightful place in the industry. She also noted that the awards ceremony underscored WIME’s commitment to fostering stronger networks, creating mentorship opportunities, and advocating for policies that genuinely support women in the maritime and energy sector.

Recognising the honorees, she lauded their hard work, determination, and excellence, describing them as an inspiration not only to WIME but to the entire nation. The Managing Solicitor of Trizon Law Chambers, Foluke Akinmoladun, emphasised the need for increased support and policy reforms to enhance women’s inclusion in the nation’s maritime sector. Akinmoladun stated that the maritime industry has one of the lowest levels of female participation, noting that both Nigerian and international reports have shown that greater inclusion of women enhances the performance of organisations.
