ALVIN, Texas — Twenty-four hours after a deadly tornado ripped through Brazoria County , we now know the victim killed was a 48-year-old woman. According to the Brazoria County Sheriff's Office, she was in her modular home located along County Road 191-A near Liverpool when the tornado hit. They said she was later found thrown 100 feet from her residence.
On Sunday, officials were seen back out assessing the extensive damage. Residents were also up early cleaning the debris, including Aime Duncan and her husband. That's according to the sheriff’s office, who reported a tornado touched down between the Alvin and Hillcrest area and the Liverpool area, killing one woman and injuring four others and leaving behind a path of destruction. "I literally felt the force of it blowing us,” Duncan said. Aime shared that she and her family were in the middle of opening gifts and celebrating a late Christmas when the tornado hit.
"It came straight through our living room,” Duncan said. "We had our 96-year-old grandmother here, we just hunkered down and covered each other up." Fortunately, she said other than some minor cuts and bruises, no one was seriously hurt.
"That's the best thing," Duncan said "Everybody was safe. Everybody was good." Their home located on Mustang Road, which was closed for several hours Saturday due to all the damage and debris, didn’t fare as well.
"We don't have a roof," she said. "We don't have 80% of the house. It all fell through last night.
” She and her husband are now left with uncertainty. "We're trying to just get our stuff out and figure out what we're doing next," Duncan said. "So Happy New Year.
" Alvin ISD is also working to come up with a plan after one of its campuses located across from Duncan’s home was hit hard. Early Sunday morning, district officials and structural experts were seen surveying Walt Disney Elementary School, which now has heavy roof damage. The district told our KHOU 11’s Michelle Choi they are still working on a plan, including where to relocate the students and staff when they return from winter break in just over a week.
That information is set to be released sometime early this week. Meanwhile as recovery efforts continue, members of this community shared their grateful and ready to rebuild. "It was scary, but we made it, and it could have been a lot worse,” Duncan said.
