Chennai: The body of a 32-year-old woman was found stuffed in a suitcase at an under-construction site at Kumaran Kudil, Thoraipakkam, on Thursday. Using CCTV camera footage, police within hours arrested a 26-year-old man who, they said, had killed the woman, a sex worker, on Tuesday night when she asked for more money. Police said the man, Manikandan, told them that he had contacted a pimp who arranged for the woman, Deepa alias Velli Ammal from Madhavaram, to visit him at home on Tuesday night.

When she was leaving Manikandan paid the woman 12,000, but she demanded 6,000 more. They argued and Manikandan hit Deepa on the head with a hammer and left her bleeding profusely on the floor, police said. An investigation officer said Manikandan later dragged her body inside the washroom and left it there.

He turned off her mobile phone and slept. He woke up on Wednesday morning, wiped off the blood stains and used room spray to get rid of the odour. However, Manikandan received a call from his family that they were on their way back home.

So, he purchased a suitcase from a nearby shop, placed the body inside, and left the suitcase at a construction site three streets away from his home. On Thursday morning, workers arriving at the construction site saw stray dogs around a suitcase with flies on it. They informed the Thoraipakkam police who opened the suitcase and found the severed body parts.

Meanwhile, Deepa's brother had filed a person missing complaint at the Madhavaram police station on Wednesday night. On Thursday morning the Madhavaram police too reached the location, by tracking Deepa's phone, around the time the body was found. Her brother confirmed the body was Deepa's and Thoraipakkam police registered a murder case .

The police team scanned CCTV camera footage and identified the suspect as Manikandan from Sivaganga who is employed at a private company in Oragadam. He was nabbed..
