Wolves show no let up in 9-3 win over Spitfires

Article content It started poorly and never really got better for the Windsor Spitfires. The Spitfires allowed a season-high nine goals against as the Sudbury Wolves scored early and pressed throughout on the way to a 9-3 win over Windsor on Friday before a crowd of 4,658 at the Sudbury Community Arena. The Spitfires generated just four shots in offence in the opening 20 minutes and the Wolves jumped to a 2-0 lead on goals by Nathan Villeneuve and Quintin Musty.

Lemieux looked to give the visitors a lift by cutting the lead to 3-1, but the Wolves countered with a Kocha Delic goal 29 seconds after that and Kieron Walton made it 5-1 just 47 seconds after that goal. At that point, the Spitfires replaced starting goalie Joey Costanzo, who faced 14 shots, with Carter Froggett. Alex Pharand and Lucas Di Giantommaso sandwich goals around a Cole Davis marker as the Wolves pushed the lead 7-2 after 40 minutes.

Ilya Protas scored Windsor’s third goal, but Pharand and Musty countered to close the scoring as the Wolves held a solid 40-27 edge in shots. The Spitfires will wrap a three-game road trip up on Sunday in Sault Ste. Marie against the Greyhounds.
