The pupils from Wolsingham will fly out to the Himalayas in July, boosting their personal development by teaching Nepalese children conversational English. And they helped fund the trip with a raffle during the school’s annual community Christmas dinner, which was enjoyed by 70 senior citizens from the local area. The event featured a full Christmas dinner served by the pupils, festive music, and a fun quiz, organised by teacher Gary Thompson.

Councillor Savory, who was also on washing-up duties after the dinner, said: “This school has a long-standing presence in the local community and that is strengthened by events like this. A lot of planning and preparation goes into creating this special evening and I am proud of everyone involved.

” Headteacher Nick Mitchinson told the guests of his pride at the school being “an integral part of this special community for more than 400 years”. Most read: ‘Tis the season to stay informed! Catering staff at the school volunteer their services on the evening, and Weardale Community Transport drives the guests to and from the festivities.
