‘Witnessing greatness’ – Nick Kyrgios agrees with Piers Morgan once again about controversial Jannik Sinner US Open win

Tennis star Nick Kyrgios has backed Piers Morgan once again as the pair criticised US Open winner Jannik Sinner. The Italian won his second Grand Slam of the year on Sunday, beating American Taylor Fritz in three straight sets to add to his Australian Open victory. Sinner came into the tournament off the back of being cleared of failing two anti-doping tests when he tested positive for the banned anabolic steroid Clostebol.

At the start of the competition, he alluded to getting a cold reception from fellow athletes at Flushing Meadows despite the accusations being dropped. Now, Kyrgios - who has missed out on playing this year due to an ongoing wrist problem - has fired yet another shot at him. Morgan reposted a tweet from the official US Open's X account announcing Sinner’s victory on Sunday evening, which read 'Sinner Sinner US Open winner'.

“*after failing TWO drugs tests. (Fixed it for you),” the broadcaster wrote. Kyrgios then followed this reply with one of his own, which was more than a little sarcastic.

Starting with a shrugging emoji, followed by a yawning face, he referenced Sinner being the first Italian man to win the competition and wrote: “First time in history! We are witnessing greatness!” Sinner was found to have Colestbol, a steroid that can be used to build muscle mass, in his urine during Indian Wells in March. Eight days later, another sample also tested positive for low levels of it. He was handed a provisional suspension but, as Sinner challenged it successfully, he was able to keep playing.

The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) found Sinner was inadvertently contaminated with the substance by his physiotherapist, Giacomo Naldi. Naldi had been applying an over-the-counter spray available in Italy to a cut on his own hand and had then carried out treatments on Sinner. In August, the ITIA accepted the explanation and that the violation was not intentional.

After this decision, Kyrgios called for the world no. 1 to be banned . Taking to X, he said on the decision: "Ridiculous - whether it was accidental or planned.

You get tested twice with a banned (steroid) substance...

you should be gone for two years. "Your performance was enhanced. "Massage cream.

...

Yeah nice." Referencing the previous 12 months, Sinner said in his on-court interview: "This title for me means so much, the last period of my career, was not easy. "I love tennis, I practise a lot for this kind of stage, but I also realise off the court there is a life.

"I would like to dedicate this title to my aunt, she is not feeling well and I don't know how much longer I have her in my life. She was a very important for my life and she still is." It was double heartache for Americans, with Jessica Pegula losing the women's final to Aryna Sabalenka.
