A few weeks ago, in a column on the cost and performance of Conway schools, I speculated that our test scores would probably improve at least a little when last spring’s assessment results were posted. That bet was based on the apparently naive assumption that they couldn’t possibly go much lower. My rare moment of backhanded optimism was clearly unjustified.

Those results were released last week, and the district-wide figures show still more erosion in every discipline. In 2023, only 35 percent of all tested students in Conway were found proficient in math, and this year that percentage dropped to 32. Barely half of Conway students achieved reading proficiency in 2023, and fewer than half in 2024.

Science proficiency across all grades slid from an average of 32 percent to 23. Javascript is required for you to be able to read premium content. Please enable it in your browser settings.
