* Warning: Contains spoilers for 1923 Season 2 finale * The 1923 Season 2 finale has finally arrived with fans left shocked over what feels like an abrupt conclusion to the epic tale. Those hoping to see a happy ending already knew that it was highly unlikely based on the brutal penultimate episode that saw Jack Dutton (Darren Mann) gunned down and Alexandra (Julia Schlaepfer) stranded in a frozen wilderness with nobody to help her. However, those who believe in fairy tales hoped for a wonderful reunion between Alex and for her to be reunited with husband Spencer Dutton(Brandon Sklenar).
With Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford) in position at the train station ready for a bloody gunfight with wealthy mining tycoon Donald Whitfield's (Timothy Dalton) men it seemed inevitable that more death and destruction is on the menu for fans as they wrapped up the penultimate episode last week. That assumption turned out to be devastatingly correct as the feature-length finale got underway. As Alexandra manages to start a fire in the car she is stranded in fate steps in with Spencer travelling on a train that passes by as he spots her from the window.
He runs to rescue his wife with fans finally getting the long-awaited reunion of the pair they had hoped for. But it soon becomes apparent that things are bleak for the pair as Spencer gets her to a doctor and they learn that she has severe frostbite on her hands and feet. As the train arrives at the station there is a brutal gun fight between the Duttons and Whitfield's men.
Jacob Dutton is shot and ends up accompanying a desperately unwell Alexandra to hospital as Spencer heads back to the ranch to save his aunt Cara Dutton (Helen Mirren) and the remaining Dutton allies just in time. Spencer then rushes to the hospital to be with Alexandra and their baby son who are both in a critical condition. Heartbreaking scenes then see Alexandra tell Spencer she does not want to live when a doctor says she will need her hands and legs amputated to save her life, and she dies in in his arms.
It's revealed that their child is John Dutton II, meaning he is the grandfather of Yellowstone's John Dutton III (Kevin Costner) and Cara steps in to help raise the child as Spencer takes over running the ranch. The end of the episode reveals that Spencer never remarries and when his time comes 45 years after her death he is shown visitng her grave before being reunited with Alexandra in a dream sequence as as they meet in a ballroom and begin to dance. The tragic ending for Alex and Spencer perhaps comes as no surprise after Elsa Dutton's gut-wrenching fate in the debut Yellowstone prequel 1883.
Fans are desperate to know if 1923 will return but it seems unlikely based on Spencer's fate already being shown. However, the popularity of Spencer with viewers could mean we see him turn up in another Yellowstone prequel that is in the works - 1944. As Spencer doesn't die until 1969 he could feature in some way but it would be a much older incarnation of him.
The only star of the show who survived the finale and has spoken about any possibility of a sequel is Brandon - but he seemed certain things would draw to a close with Season 2 at the time. He told The Hollywood Reporter in May 2023: “No, no, it’s bookend. It’s still limited, but I think of it as one piece - there’s just a split in the middle, but it’s all one piece.
It will conclude.” The Season 2 finale of 1923 is streaming on Paramount+..
