Chennai: Madras high court warned that it would be constrained to summon the chief secretary if Aadhar , ration and voter ID cards are not issued to the people of Kalvarayan Hills as expeditiously as possible. A division bench of Justice S M Subramaniam and Justice N Mala made the observation on Thursday as the govt sought three months' time to complete the process. "If you are not doing the minimum, we will be forced to summon the Chief Secretary.

You just cannot keep saying that you are receiving applications and processing them," the court said. The observations were made on a suo motu plea initiated by the court to rehabilitate the people of the hills in the aftermath of the Kallakurichi illicit liquor tragedy in which 68 persons were killed. When the plea came up for further hearing on Thursday, the court observed that while people living on the mainland are enjoying hi-tech facilities, people in the hills should at least be getting the basic amenities.

The court then directed the managing director of Villupuram Transport Corporation to appear before the court either in person or through video conferencing and explain the action taken to provide adequate buses to the villages in the hills. The hearing was adjourned to Sept 20..
