VACAVILLE — Vacaville Unified School District will hold a special Field Dedication Ceremony in honor of the late Jacob Wright, the beloved teacher, coach, and mentor who died in 2023. The event will take place on Sunday, April 13, at 12:30 p.m.
at the Will C. Wood Stadium . Gates will open at 12:15.
The ceremony will commemorate Coach Wright’s legacy and impact on the Vacaville community. The dedication will include the unveiling of a permanent plaque at WCW Stadium, as well as new signage above the press box that will bear the name " Jacob Wright Memorial Field ," alongside one of his most memorable sayings: “It’s a Great Day to be a Wildcat.” On October 14, 2023, VUSD mourned the loss of Wright.
In recognition of his contributions to students, athletes, and the community, the district and Will C. Wood High School will dedicate this football field in his honor. Wright’s career in education spanned 24 years, the majority of which he dedicated to the Vacaville district.
A graduate of Lindenwood University, he earned his master’s degree in kinesiology and applied his knowledge to develop student-athletes both on and off the field. In 2017-2018, he was recognized as VUSD’s Teacher of the Year. Beyond the classroom, Wright was a champion of the youth sports community.
He dedicated countless hours to the Junior Wildcats program, helping elementary and middle school students develop not just as athletes but as young scholars. Wright later introduced the NFL Flag Youth Football program to Vacaville, providing a new pathway for kids to engage in sports. His dedication to youth development was recognized nationally when he received the Semper Fi Coaching Award from the U.
S. Marine Corps for his outstanding leadership in youth football. Wright’s influence extended far beyond the field.
He was known for his connections with students, ensuring every child on campus felt seen, heard, and valued. He made it his mission to learn every student's name, greeting them with his booming voice and infectious energy. He built relationships that transcended sports.
