Opinion Re: Thousands gather at Manitoba legislature to celebrate Canada It seems there is a groundswell of emotional, public, resentment and patriotism.
But what are the constructive, long-term solutions to Canadian’s refusal to create a more diversified, robust, self-sufficient country? This is not new, folks! The historic interprovincial trade barriers, regional resource-based economies controlled by foreign money and relatively easy profits from selling minimally processed, low value-added products are not new developments. They have been around for generations. There has not been much political or commercial will to invest in the price of building a strong, diversified, national economy where our various regions operate within a freely trading national trading block, to the mutual benefit of all.
Too often, local, provincial and regional vested interests trump the development of a greater, more expansive national vision. Adam Hannah waves his flag as hundreds of people gather at the legislative grounds in Winnipeg on Sunday for the Rally For Canada. (John Woods/Winnipeg Free Press files) So, now .
.. over to the next generation! What will be their vision and what will they be willing to sacrifice for their freedom? What will they have learned from us? More of the same — wanting to be comfortable hobbits pursuing their own self-realizations, like us? Or will there be a greater consideration of “the other” and a collaborative impulse that trumps comfortable, self-serving aggrandizement.
Or not? Will it be comfort, apathy and status quo or constructive, creative, collaborative engagement with a new strength? Stay tuned! Advertisement.
