Why well known Welsh beach has been left looking like a 'sandy Scalextric'

The sandy beach at Barmouth is not looking its normal self

A beach in North Wales has been transformed - with strange lines and ridges in the sand. Images of Barmouth beach looking out of sorts were captured by local photographer Dominic Vacher. One person on Facebook described it as "sunny sands Scalextric".

But people don't need to worry that the odd shapes are a sign of alien invaders or anything to do with unusual weather or tides. The beach is in fact being prepared for the Barmouth Beach Race. Dominic said: "Barmouth Beach got a bit of a re-design today in preparation for the motocross this weekend.



The beautiful sunset really helps show off its curves." It is one of the few beach races held in the UK.

What's On Barmouth said: "It's a real 'thrills and spills' event that takes place on a 2-mile beach track in front of Barmouth RNLI Station, that is built especially for the occasion and removed after the event. "Races are scheduled throughout the day on both Saturday and Sunday and includes Junior and Seniors races, and are fought extremely hard by all the competitors who want to win this coveted and prestigious race. "Come along and see this magnificent spectacle and enjoy the unique atmosphere created on one of the few beach races held in the UK.
