Zamfara State Government has explained why it delayed the implementation of N70,000 national minimum wage in the state, saying it would be implemented after proper framework. This was disclosed on Wednesday evening by the Zamfara state chairman steering committee for the verification of civil servants, who is also the Head of Civil service in the state, Barrister Ahmed Liman, while briefing newsmen at Government House, Gusau, the state capital. Barrister Ahmed Liman explained that Governor Dauda Lawal had assured the civil servants of implementing national minimum wage as soon as the workers’ verification exercise in the state is concluded.
According to him, the state government has no proper salary scale for now,” we have to verify our workforce to ascertain the number of our staff,” he said. “The present administration of Governor Dauda Lawal in the state is friendly to its workers; this government meant well to the state workers,” he emphasised. He further assured that once the verification committee concluded its task, the state government would waste no time in implementing the national minimum wage of N70,000.
“During the ongoing verification exercise, we discovered ghost workers in some places, like in one of the hospitals, we discovered the list of 22 medical doctors in their payroll, but they have only 2 serving doctors,” he mentioned. Ahmed liman further explained that before the ongoing verification process,the state government has over 34,000 workforce from ministries and parastatals in the state.
