Angela Onwuzoo A fertility specialist, Dr. Adeleke Daramola, says women who see their period twice a month should go for medical evaluation to be sure there are no underlying health issues that could predispose them to fertility problems. According to him, most women who see their menses twice a month have a reduced chance of conception.

Daramola who is the Clinical Director, Androcare Fertility Clinic, stated this during an interview with PUNCH HealthWise, stressing that fibroid, cervical cancer, and hormonal imbalance could make some women see their menstruation more than once a month. He explained, “Normally, it all depends on the circle length of the woman. For example, if the woman has a 24-day circle and you know in a month we have 30 days.

When she sees it on the 24th, that is once a month. “ But some women have a circle length of 18 days. In that kind of situation, they may see their periods twice a month.

However, women above 45 years old who are having their period twice a month should be screened for cervical cancer. “Seeing menses twice in a month for older women could be an indication of a very severe health problem. If the woman is below 45 years, it could be a sign of fibroid or bleeding disorders.

For women above 45 years, it is not a good sign. “Such women have to have a test to check if it is a hormonal imbalance or something else. They can also do a scan to check if the pelvis is okay.

But the causes could be a fibroid, pregnancy, cervical cancer and hormonal imbalance.” According to the online portal, Verywell Health, getting frequent periods, and even two periods in one month, is at the very least annoying, and it could be a sign of an underlying medical issue. However, it could also just be how your body functions or a stage of life you’re going through.

“Regardless, if you’re having more frequent periods than you’re used to, or you get them more frequently than most, it’s worth a conversation with your doctor to figure out why”, it said. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, most women experience a 28-day menstrual cycle. “This cycle lasts from the first day of menstrual bleeding to the day before bleeding begins the following month.

“The length of the cycle varies between individuals, but is usually between 26 and 32 days long, with 28 days being the average. “The most fertile time of the menstrual cycle is between days eight and 19,” ACOG said. The fertility expert notes that it is important for a woman to know why she is seeing her period twice a month and what needs to be done because it could affect her fertility.

“Most women who see their period twice in a month are at risk of infertility because if a woman is having intermenstrual bleeding, the blood kills the sperm and there is no way the woman will get pregnant. “If a woman is regularly menstruating, there is no way she can calculate when she is ovulating. So, it will be difficult to get pregnant.

“And if she decides to have sex every three days, what if she had sex and blood is there? So, it causes infertility. Seeing menses twice a month reduces a woman’s chance of conception because of the difficulty in tracking her ovulation and the blood being harmful to the sperm cells.” According to the U.

S. Department of Health and Human Services, the average woman has her period for nearly 40 years. “While changes to the menstrual cycle are more common during puberty and in the years leading to menopause, they are not as common in a person’s 20s and 30s.

If a person frequently has two periods in one month, this may indicate an underlying medical condition that could benefit from treatment”, it noted. Copyright PUNCH All rights reserved.
