Why our poets, playwrights, authors, actors, singers, dancers and artists need to be applauded

The arts are often described as the poor cousin when it comes to public funding. Time and again it seems all areas of creative endeavour are an easy target when money needs to be saved. Those who understandably will protest on behalf of the health service, march for a better educational outcome, shout loudly as infrastructure crumbles or warn of dire consequences if environmental targets aren’t met very often remain silent when the arts sector is in the firing line.

Too many of us are tempted to see those who write, act, capture, create, produce, and perform as part of a luxury society could easily forgo. It’s a careless attitude to adopt. Poets, playwrights, authors, actors, singers, dancers, artists and creators of all genres need to be nurtured, encouraged and applauded for their contribution to both our pleasure and wellbeing.
