Joelinton was the Newcastle United midfielder to pick up a booking and subsequent suspension in Saturday's win over Leicester City but it is team-mate Sean Longstaff who will sit out of Wednesday's Carabao Cup clash with Brentford. The midfielder will be left at home for the quarter-final encounter as Eddie Howe recalls Lewis Miley into the senior side. This, despite Longstaff picking up just two yellow cards in the Premier League - and four in all competitions - this season.
Unfortunately for the player, Carabao Cup rules state two bookings in an individual cup campaign means a player must serve a ban during the next match before their yellow card counter resets. Longstaff picked up his first of his two yellows in the competition in the 1-0 win over Wimbledon at St James' Park before being punished in the 2-0 victory over Chelsea in the last round. "It is slightly strange with how the booking system works now - so yes, we lose Sean [for Brentford] and then we lose Joelinton [for Ipswich]," Howe said at Tuesday's pre-match press conference .
"But I think that is a position that we have strength in depth with Joe Willock coming back to fitness and Lewis Miley playing again last night, which is good." Miley played 45 minutes of Newcastle United 's under-21 win over Chelsea's young guns on Monday evening, replaced at the interval to protect him ahead of first-team matches this week. The youngster is likely to retain his place among Howe's senior stars come the weekend when the Magpies travel to Ipswich Town.
Joelinton will be absent for the trip south, despite featuring against Brentford, while Sandro Tonali and Fabian Schar are both walking a suspension tightrope on four Premier League bookings so far this term..
