Joanne Dewar is Project Leader for Project Nemo, and she’s particularly enthusiastic about enhancing the way the financial services and payments industries engage with people with disabilities. London-based, Dewar discusses how crucial it is for businesses in this industry to consider more thoughtfully making things accessible. It’s not just about the goods or services that they are offering; it’s also about how they hire employees and treat them.

The ultimate aim is to give job opportunities that welcome people with various disabilities.One of the things that Project Nemo is doing is producing a series of short films. Each of the movies is a different individual with a disability, giving an honest view of what they face on a daily basis when accessing financial services.



The short films cover everything from getting into apps and websites to handling day-to-day banking operations. After each story, the movies also suggest easy ways things could be improved. Apart from these films, they also have a podcast series and plenty of articles filled with practical tips and information for businesses looking to make their practices more inclusive.

Dewar also highlights a large misbelief about what exactly disability inclusion is as some people believe it’s all about making a space accessible for wheelchair users. But the reality is, inclusion is much more than that and is about taking into consideration many different needs—such as visually impaired people, hearing impairments, dexterity issues, and even different neurological impairments. All of these need to be considered when creating digital products, such as websites and apps.

What’s great is that you don’t have to be entirely an accessibility guru in order to make some adjustments. A simple test for you to conduct on your digital products is to turn off your mouse and attempt to navigate your site with a keyboard only. This simple test can tell you whether your site is accessible to individuals with screen readers or other adaptive equipment.
