Why $51 million Eagles EDGE defender Bryce Huff played 6 snaps vs. Jaguars | Sporting News

The Bryce Huff saga took another strange turn for the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. Huff, who the Eagles signed to a three-year, $51 million free agent contract in March, played a season-low six snaps in Philly’s 28-23 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars at the Liinc. It’s been a brutal start to 2024 for Huff, who had played at least 18 defensive snaps over the Eagles' first seven games.

He hasn’t been able to produce much of anything with those reps, though, entering Week 9 with just three solo tackles and one sack that he split with rookie Cooper DeJean against the Browns. Huff was not on the field to start the game, which he has done often this season despite his struggles. He did flash late in the second quarter on a stunt that forced Trevor Lawrence to bail and release the ball early on third down.

com/v64575x5Rs Huff was rarely heard from — or seen — after that, leaving many to wonder if he was benched in favor of Brandon Graham and Nolan Smith. Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni gave reporters an explanation after the game, downplaying Huff’s limited role as injury related . "Bryce came off the field after warmups,” Sirianni said.

“I won’t talk too much about injuries, but his hand was bothering him and he was getting treatment in the locker room after warmups. So, we were trying to protect him there." Huff was not listed on Philly’s injury report this week, and he declined to speak with the media postgame.

It’s extremely rare for players to suffer serious issues during warmups, outside of tweaks or soft tissue flare-ups, but maybe Sirianni is telling it straight and there’s nothing to see here. (Sirianni also said the team was going to need Devin White this season, and we all know how that saga ended.) Either way, this is just the latest chapter in what has been an absolute disaster so far for both parties.
