There may not have been a player who turned more heads at the NFL combine this year than Texas A&M defensive end Shemar Stewart. It wasn't just that Stewart measured in at 6-5, 267 pounds with 34 3/8-inch arms. He then took that size and put on a show at the combine with a 4.
59 40-yard dash, a 40-inch vertical and a 10-foot-11-inch broad jump. There is no peer for Stewart athletically at defensive end in this class. It's no surprise he's scheduled to be one of the San Francisco 49ers' pre-draft visits according to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport.
Getting to know the type of person Stewart is may be paramount to cracking the code on him as a prospect. Despite his numerous athletic gifts, Stewart only racked up 11 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks across 37 games with the Aggies.
He posted 1.5 sacks in each of his three seasons. That level of production is cause for alarm when considering the tools in Stewart's bag.
The 49ers will need to figure out in their pre-draft visit whether Stewart is the kind of player who is going to do the things necessary to turn his physical traits into production. If they believe he is, they could talk themselves into him as the No. 11 pick in this year's draft.
If they're not sold after their meeting, it's hard to imagine them betting on the measurables with what is such a crucial draft pick for their future. This article originally appeared on Niners Wire: Why 49ers pre-draft meeting with Shemar Stewart is so important.
