John Lewis have finally unveiled their yearly Christmas advert featuring the heart-warming story of two sisters' magical journey, rivalling Aldi's Kevin the Carrot and Sainsbury's ' Rhoal Dahl story - but who do you think won the 2024 Christmas advert war? As the weather gets colder and evenings become a time to snuggle up in front of the TV, many people will be looking to the future and thinking of Christmas, while others will almost definitely be complaining it's too early to even contemplate it. However, the month of December is fast approaching, meaning the Christmas advert battle has begun. For the next month or so, between evening watches of I'm A Celebrity , Coronation Street and many other TV shows, viewers will be reminded that Christmas is coming as big companies and charities fill their screens with sometimes heart-warming, sometimes comedic Christmas adverts.

This year, John Lewis, Aldi , Lidl , M&S , Disney, Tesco , Asda , Waitrose , Sainsbury's and Shelter have all released adverts that viewers have dubbed the 'best this year'. The battle of the Christmas ads is now a big business. With retailers believed to have collectively spent a massive £10.

5 billion on their offerings, it's safe to say companies are competing with each other for viewers' watchful eyes and ultimately attract shoppers to their outlets. According to figures from the Advertising Association and data provider WARC, this massive spend in 2024 is an 8% increase on last year. Iconic British retailer John Lewis kicked off the Christmas advert trend in 2007 with the artistic 'Shadows' featuring people creating sculptures with household items that transformed into art when projected onto the wall.

However, in recent years, other retailers have brought their A-game to the table, with Sainsbury's 1914 football at Christmas advert and Aldi's regular Kevin the Carrot features being of note. Here's a taste of what each company did: Aldi In classic Aldi fashion, the budget supermarket has gone for comedic value this year, featuring Kevin the Carrot for the ninth year in a row.

This year, Kevin and his wife Katie go on a Mission Impossible-style adventure to save the Spirit of Christmas from evil 'Humbugs'. Alongside the advert, Aldi will be selling their Kevin merch again this year, but act fast as it usually sells out. Asda In another comedic advert, Asda featured garden gnomes coming to the rescue when one of their stores was cut off due to snow.

This pun-filled advert took over seven months to create using more than 3,000 hours of animated footage. Asda has also taken a leaf out of Aldi's book this year, selling drag queen and surfer gnomes in their stores for just £7. Disney Film-making giant Disney went down the heart-warming route this year with their advert, which tells the story of friendship.

The animated TV spot named The Boy and the Octopus, directed by former Marvel director Taika Waititi, follows the story of a boy who discovers a creature attached to his head while on holiday. Eagle-eyed viewers have spotted ' Easter eggs ' in the advert, with references to Toy Story, Lilo and Stitch and Moana littered throughout. John Lewis Christmas advert trend-setter John Lewis appear to have hit the nail on the head yet again in 2024 with their heart simple yet emotive story of a sibling bond.

In a big change from last year's Snapper Venus flytrap, which wasn't as well received as they may have hoped, the iconic British store have gone back to their roots. In the style of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the advert sees Sally fall into memories with her sister while searching for the perfect gift. Lidl Lidl has gone down a completely different route to its budget supermarket competitor Aldi, producing yet another heart-warming advert centred around the theme of creating a magical Christmas for everyone.

Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Tom Hooper, best known for The King's Speech, the supermarket's advert signals the return of the Lidl's Toy Bank scheme which aims to give over 100,000 toys to kids in need this Christmas. M&S Marks & Spencer entered the Christmas advert war this year with its short film featuring a stressed out Dawn French struggling to plan a Christmas party until a Christmas Fairy, also voiced by French, steps in to save the day. Many fans described the advert as the best Christmas TV spot by M&S in recent years, while the dress that French wore sold out quickly in most sizes.

Sainsbury's Sainsbury's completely CGI advert saw Stephen Fry bring the BFG to life. In the ad, viewers see the beloved Roald Dahl character enlist 'Sophie' - a real life Sainsbury's worker - to travel to the UK to seek out the perfect dishes for his Christmas. The advert includes a heart-warming nod to the supermarket's partnership with Comic Relief , who will distribute over five million meals to households experiencing food poverty this Christmas.

Shelter Housing and homelessness charity Shelter's Christmas advert steps into an imaginary world to escape the harsh reality of temporary accommodation. The short film, titled 'World of our Own', shows a little girl, Mia, and her dad spacewalking over an alien landscape. This is then suddenly juxtaposed with the realities of living in temporary accommodation, making for hard-hitting viewing.

Tesco Unlike it's competitors, instead of a heart-warming or comedic advert, Tesco has released a real tear-jerker. The UK's biggest supermarket tells the story of a man regaining his Christmas cheer after losing his beloved grandma. Tesco's chief commercial officer Ashwin Prasad told The Mirror he believed it was their best advert yet, and it seems many viewers also agree.

Waitrose Finally, Waitrose has received rave reviews across the board for its star-stuffed 'Whodunnit' advert, with one advertising expert even describing it as 'epic'. Starring Succession's Matthew Macfadyen, the TV spot shows an amateur detective trying to figure out who stole a cake from the fridge. Leaving the advert on a cliffhanger, Waitrose has teased that a second 60-second ad later this month will reveal the culprit once and for all.
