TEXAS, USA — The Associated Press quickly declared former President Donald Trump the victor of Texas’ electoral votes in the 2024 election on Election night Tuesday. Both Trump, a Republican, and Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris visited Texas before election day. Texas has long been seen as a Republican stronghold, and it’s been five decades since a Democrat won the state in a presidential election.
Trump won Texas in the last two presidential contests – in 2016 and 2020 – with narrow majorities. Trump won Texas with 52% of the vote to Democrat Joe Biden’s 46% in 2020 and beat Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in Texas in 2016 with 52% of the vote to Clinton’s 43%. The last Democrat to win Texas was Jimmy Carter in 1976.
The closest any Democrat has come to winning Texas at any time since then was Bill Clinton in 1992, who finished just about 3% behind incumbent President George H.W. Bush.
