DALLAS — The Dallas Mavericks shocked the world Saturday night when a report came out that they would be trading away star Luka Doncic, among other players in the organization. The report from NBA insider Shams Charania detailed the trade: The Mavs are sending Doncic, Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris to the Los Angeles Lakers and receiving Anthony Davis, Max Christie and a 2029 first-round pick in return. So, with Doncic now out of the picture, where does that leave the Mavericks starting five? Here's a look at what the new lineup could look like.
Dallas Mavericks new starting five At point guard, veteran Kyrie Irving will stay in his role, leading the Mavs offense with his incredible ball-handling and efficient shot selection. In the shooting guard role, Klay Thompson will keep his spot as well. In the forward positions, Dallas just got a whole lot bigger.
P.J. Washington, who has been playing power forward in the absence of several Dallas bigs, will likely slide into the small forward position.
That's because Anthony Davis will serve as the Mavericks starting power forward, though the case could be made for him as a center. However, Daniel Gafford will likely stay at the center, giving the Mavs some major size and defensive prowess in the frontcourt. Spencer Dinwiddie will most likely come off the bench first over the newly acquired Max Christie, although it can be assumed that Christie will see a good amount of playing time as he was establishing himself as a mainstay in the starting lineup while with the Lakers.
In addition, Christie will also be competing with Quentin Grimes for playing time..
