At least two people were killed and dozens more injured in a suspected attack at a Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany, on Friday evening, CNN reported. The attack occurred when a car deliberately rammed into a crowd of people at the market, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries. German police have detained a 50-year-old Saudi Arabian doctor who they suspect of crashing a car into a busy Magdeburg Christmas market, killing two people and injuring 68 more.
The suspect, Taleb A, supported Alternative for Germany (AfD), a far-right German political party with an anti-immigration attitude, and is a severe critic of Islam, according to his social media profile. Taleb secured permanent residence status in Germany in 2006 after being born in the Saudi Arabian city of Hofuf in 1974. In 2016, he received recognition as a refugee.
In Saudi Arabia, where Islam is the only religion recognised by law, he was unable to voice his atheist beliefs and opinions, according to the BBC. According to the BBC, the suspect established wearesaudi.net after relocating to Germany to assist former Muslims who were escaping the Gulf and to serve as a repository for information so that others could follow suit.
Taleb is reportedly wanted by Saudi Arabia on suspicion of terrorism and importing Middle Eastern girls into the European Union. Nevertheless, in spite of the accusations against him, Germany has granted him asylum and declined to deport him to Saudi Arabia..
