After six years of being held at the Royal Albert Hall, the star-studded ceremony moved to a new home in 2023 – the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall - where it will once again take place.
With the most nominations, thriller The Conclave is expected to triumph in multiple categories, including the coveted Best Film, where it is up against The Brutalist, Anora, A Complete Unknown and Emilia Perez. The hit thriller starring Ralph Fiennes , Stanley Tucci and Isabella Rossellini is about a secretive and high-stakes election of a new Pope, where power, ambition, and personal secrets collide among the warring cardinals. It has beaten the Golden Globes ’ big winner, the Spanish drama Emilia Perez, which has come in second in the number of nominations with 11 BAFTA nods after sweeping up 10 gongs at the Golden Globes last month.
However, as one of the big winners at multiple ceremonies across the pond, The Brutalist is also considered a favourite to win. Conclave is one of the big films expected to triumph at Sunday's British Academy Film Awards, with Ralph Fiennes a hot favourite to win Best Leading Actor If Conclave were to miss out on Best Film, it's a dead set to scoop the award for Outstanding British Film, where it's nominated against a hugely varied list of pictures. The shortlist inclues Bird, Blitz, Gladiator II, Hard Truths, Kneecap, Lee, Love Lies Bleeding, The Outrun and Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl.
As a British star Ralph is also one of the favourites to win Best Actor, and is expected to head-to-head with Adrien Brody for the top honour. Other Best Actor nominees are Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown), Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), Hugh Grant (Heretic) and Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice). Demi Moore is the hot favourite to win Best Actress for her critically-acclaimed performance in The Substance, however veteran British star Marianne Jean-Baptiste could also triumph for her role in Hard Truths.
Karla Sofía Gascón was once considered the top pick for Emilia Pérez, however the actress has been embroiled in controversy in recent months after her historic tweets resurfaced, bringing an end to her awards momentum. The pair will battle it out with Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Mikey Madison (Anora) and Saoirse Ronan (The Outrun). Having scooped every major honour this awards season, Kieran Culkin is expected to win the Supporting Actress gong for A Real Pain, though it's been predicted that Guy Pearce could provide an upset for his role in The Brutalist.
Demi Moore is the hot favourite to win Best Actress for her critically-acclaimed performance in The Substance However veteran British star Marianne Jean-Baptiste could also triumph for her role in Mike Leigh's Hard Truths Fans are hoping that Ariana Grande could be awarded Supporting Actress for her performance in Wicked, though Zoe Saldana is the favourite ahead of the ceremony Other nominations include Yura Borisov (Anora), Clarence Maclin (Sing Sing), Edward Norton (A Complete Unknown) and Jeremy Strong (The Apprentice). Zoe Saldana has been the top pick for Supporting Actress for her role in Emilia Perez, though many fans are hoping that Ariana Grande could triumph for her performance as Glinda in Wicked. The pair will battle it out with Selena Gomez (Emilia Pérez), Felicity Jones (The Brutalist), Jamie Lee Curtis (The Last Showgirl), and Isabella Rossellini (Conclave).
Marisa Abela leads the nominees for the EE BAFTA Rising Star Award for her portrayal as Amy Winehouse in the 2024 film Back To Black. The Industry star is the most popular pick for the award, which is the only one voted for by the general public. The shortlist, is made up of Marisa, Jharrel Jerome (Unstoppable), David Jonsson (Alien: Romulus), Mikey Madison (Anora) and Nabhaan Rizwan (In Camera).
BAFTA chairwoman Sara Putt told the PA news agency the BAFTA nominations list this year was 'just such a brilliant variety.' She added: 'But then also, when you look at the 10 films in best film, I think you've got six different genres in there. 'You've got sci-fi, you've got comedy, you've got horror.
.. you've got straight drama, you've got musicals, and to see horror, with Nosferatu and The Substance and Heretic, all getting nominated.
Having been the major winner this awards season, Adrien Brody is one of the odds-on favourites to win Best Actor for The Brutalist 'You know, films with music in them that you can go from Wicked through to Kneecap. It's an amazing list with real breadth and depth, which is very exciting.' The award is seen as the pathway to A-list success with previous winners including Tom Holland, James McAvoy, Tom Hardy, Lashana Lynch and Kristen Stewart.
David Tennant will take to the stage to host the BAFTAs for a second year in a row. The actor, 53, first hosted the awards show last year, taking over from Richard E Grant He will no doubt be bringing his charisma and humour following a widely acclaimed debut that was watched by over 3.8m viewers at home.
More than 20 million views were clocked up through fans catching up on ceremony highlights on social media. While Prince William, who is the president of the BAFTA, is usually accompanied by Catherine on the red carpet, the Waleses are not expected to attend this year’s ceremony. Kate missed the awards last year weeks before she revealed in a video message on March 22 that she was suffering from cancer.
Prince William walked the red carpet alone at the Baftas. The 2025 EE Bafta Film Awards will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer at 7pm on Sunday February 16.
