Farrell and his wife met when she was a backup dancer for Jane’s Addiction in 1997, and she recently leapt to her husband’s defence after chaos at a gig led to the cancellation of the band’s tour Dubbed the godfather of alternative rock, Perry Farrell landed himself in hot water recently after getting into a heated physical altercation with Jane’s Addiction bandmate Dave Navarro during a September 13 show in Boston. It ultimately led to the cancellation of all remaining shows on the band’s North American tour – their first tour in 14 years. Navarro attributed the decision to “a continuing pattern of behaviour and the mental health difficulties of our singer Perry Farrell”, the latter having since apologised for his “inexcusable behaviour”.
Amid the mess, Farrell’s wife, Etty Lau Farrell, has stood by her man, offering a first-hand account of what happened on stage. “Perry got up in Dave’s face and body checked him,” she wrote in an Instagram post. “Perry’s frustration had been mounting, night after night.
He felt that the stage volume had been extremely loud and his voice was being drowned out by the band. Perry had been suffering from tinnitus and a sore throat every night. But when the audience in the first row started complaining up to Perry, cussing at him that the band was [playing] too loud and that they couldn’t hear him, Perry lost it.
” Lau also expressed her disappointment in bassist Eric Avery for taking “cheap shots” at Farrell by punching him thrice in the stomach instead of de-escalating the situation, while commending Navarro for “keeping Perry at arm’s length” and complimenting him for looking “handsome and cool in the middle of a fight”. The Lollapalooza founder, 65, was a “crazed beast”, his wife continued, but he later “cried and cried” after his outburst.
