One part the UK could be set for a white Christmas , with snow predicted to fall on the big day. Weather experts at WXCHARTS are forecasting snowfall from midday on Christmas Day until midnight on 28 December in the north-west of Scotland. The country is bracing for freezing winds, with temperatures expected to drop to between 0C and -8C by 6pm on Christmas Day.
Meanwhile, England and Wales can expect milder conditions around 10C, although northern England may see temperatures drop to 0°C. Boxing Day is set to see Scotland blanketed in snow, with up to 1cm falling every hour. Rainfall in the Midlands and northern England could range from 0.
2mm to 3mm per hour, while Wales could see hourly downpours of up to 3mm. However, as we head towards December 28, most of the UK is expected to enjoy calmer, drier weather, except for Scotland which could continue to see snow showers at a rate of about 3cm an hour. Some areas, including Cornwall, Devon, the Lake District, Liverpool, and parts of Scarborough, are set to experience some rainfall.
The Met Office has revealed that the last white Christmas in the UK was recorded in 2023, when 11% of its stations reported snowfall, although no significant accumulation was noted. The Express reports that the last widespread white Christmas occurred in 2010, a phenomenon deemed "extremely unusual", with snow covering the ground at 83% of stations and sleet or flurries observed at 19% of locations, reports Birmingham Live . Brits are eagerly scanning the skies for the single snowflake required to declare a white Christmas, as per Met Office tradition.
However, despite hopes for a festive surprise, the forecast from December 26 to January 9 indicates a variety of weather conditions across the country. The Met Office predicts unsettled conditions for most areas, particularly in the northwest, with periods of wind, rain, and showers, along with some sleet and snow, especially on higher ground in the north. They added: "However, there are also some signs that more settled conditions are possible at times, these perhaps most likely across the south late in December and into early January.
Temperatures are likely to be around or slightly above average overall, but with any more settled interludes bringing a risk of frost and fog.".
