When even Jamie Lyon couldn't inspire Saints to a Good Friday win

OUR regular ‘This Week in Saints’ column throws up a mixed bag of Good Friday results in games at Wigan.

A depleted and youthful Wigan team defeated Ian Millward’s Saints on a hot day at the JJB in front of 25,004 - what was then a Super League record crowd for a regular game. Jamie Lyon scored a try and kicked two goals, with Keiron Cunningham crossing twice and Jon Wilkin grabbing the other. The only scores of the second half were two crucial Danny Tickle penalties.



30 Years Ago. 26 March 1995. Featherstone Rovers 34 Saints 27.

Despite leading 17-10 at the break at Post Office Road, Rovers outscored Saints in the second half. Tommy Martyn, 2, Shane Cooper, Steve Prescott and Mark Elia scored Saints’ tries. 35 Years Ago.

25 March 1990. Saints 12 Leigh 6. Dave Large and Roy Haggerty scored the tries, with centre Paul Loughlin adding two goals in a tight win over Leigh at Knowsley Road.

40 Years Ago. 31 March 1985. Saints 30 Warrington 28.

Andy Platt scored four tries with Harry Pinner the other as Saints won a topsy-turvy game against Warrington. 50 Years Ago. 28 March 1975.

Wigan 2 Saints 21. Tries came from three-quarters Les Jones, Frank Wilson and Roy Mathias, plus forward Eric Chisnall. 60 Years Ago.

27 March 1965. Salford 11 Saints 8. Four Len Killeen goals were not enough as Saints were edged out at The Willows.
