Vehari - Amid growing frustration over the non-procurement of wheat and unreasonably low support prices, farmers under the banner of Pakistan Kissan Ittehad staged a powerful protest rally in Vehari. The rally began at the Bar Room and culminated at the office of the Deputy Commissioner, where slogans were raised against provincial government policies, accusing them of exploiting the agricultural community. The protest was led by Pakistan Kissan Ittehad’s Central General Secretary Iftikhar Chaudhry Advocate, District President Mehr Akmal Advocate, Burewala President Ajmal Ijaz Chattha, Hafiz Muhammad Owais, Raja Safdar Abbasi, Rao Mushtaq, and Dr.
Hassan Cheema, among others. Addressing the charged crowd, the leaders criticized the Punjab government for “betraying” the farmers. “The Chief Minister encouraged us to grow more wheat with the promise that every grain would be purchased yet now they’ve set such low prices that its financial suicide for us,” said one of the leaders.
“We’ve spent our savings on seeds, fertilizers, fuel, and electricity, and now they refuse to buy at fair rates. This is economic oppression.”The protestors demanded that if the government insists on lower procurement rates, it must also reduce the prices of agricultural inputs like seeds, fertilizers, electricity, and petroleum products.
“This is not just neglect — this is cruelty against those who feed the nation,” the leaders added. In a shocking revelation, the farmers also accused the newly appointed Minister of Irrigation of diverting water away from their lands toward the Sutlej River, turning vast tracts of fertile farmland barren. “If our demands are not met, if wheat procurement does not begin and prices are not revised, we will escalate this protest,” warned the union leaders.
“The entire nation’s farmers will rise. We will shut down the country if necessary.” Fire breaks out in nearby village of Nawabshah Notable participants in the rally included renowned farmer leader Ch Amir Misali, President Luddan Ghulam Hussain, Advocate Rabia, and Imran Waraich, among many others who joined in solidarity.
