There's no doubt that everybody loves a good fish and chip meal. Whether you go for a full portion of fish and chips, battered sausage, fish cake or even a deep fried Mars bar, there's no doubt it's a much-loved British classic. Marketplace Fish N Chips, Darlington Market.
(Image: NORTHERN ECHO) This is why I was hugely excited to find out that Marketplace Fish N Chips has opened in Darlington Market - another new food stall and lunch spot to try out. Speaking to owner Adam Gilmore, 33, he admitted fish and chips is his "guilty pleasure" - and took the leap to set up his very own chippy after his daughter was born last year. Adam, from Darlington, told The Northern Echo: "I have ran a business before, but I've never ventured into the catering industry.
I do love fish and chips - it is a staple food. "It's traditional grub and my guilty pleasure - who doesn't enjoy it? I think the marketplace was missing something traditional - I think our stall will bring a lot of people in of all ages." The menu at Marketplace Fish N Chips, Darlington Market.
(Image: NORTHERN ECHO) Located right at the back of the market, the stall opened its doors in late February - and the graffiti-style blue sign stands out from a mile off as well as the wafting smell of fish and chips. On the menu you can find everything from chip cones, chip butties, kids meals, sausages and more with prices ranging from £2 to £10 meaning it is quite affordable. After some deliberation I went for the fish bites and chips for £6 - a "popular" choice according to the very friendly staff who served me.
I waited just a few minutes for my grub which came piping hot - and after a good lashing of salt and vinegar I was ready to go. Fish bites and chips from Marketplace Fish N Chips. (Image: NORTHERN ECHO) Included in the meal was a generous portion of chips and a total of five fish bites - pretty good value I would say considering the £6 price tag.
The fish, which was cod, was fresh, soft and very tasty. It wasn't dry at all - and the batter had a nice crunch when you bit into it. The crunchy batter was also very tasty and not at all greasy, unlike at some chippies you find.
As for the generous and well-cooked portion of chips, they were also tasty - coupled with a dollop of ketchup that really brought the meal together. Recommended: Overall, I'd really recommend a visit to the Marketplace Fish N' Chips. It's a well-priced lunch option with friendly staff and the food really high quality.
So if you're ever at Darlington Market and want something other than pizza or a burger then why not go for some traditional British fish and chips. I know I'll be back soon enough for another filling meal..
