Thanks to the internet, the story became a phenomenon, embodying America’s obsession with “findin’ gold in them thar hills” — resulting in five deaths and the stalking of Fenn’s granddaughter.

And yet, he continued to let people believe. While some claimed the treasure was re-hidden, others questioned if it ever existed, dismissing it as the folly of a wannabe poet. As for Fenn himself, he died in 2020, at the age of 90.

Did anyone actually find his treasure? Now, that’d be telling...
