What to watch for in WPIAL sports on April 18, 2025: North Allegheny, Canon-McMillan look for sweeps

The brooms are out and ready to be used Thursday for the two WPIAL Class 6A baseball leaders. North Allegheny in Section 1 and Canon-McMillan in Section 2 each have one-game leads in the loss column heading into their section series finales. NA has two wins this week over Central Catholic, winning by one run Monday and three runs Tuesday.

The Tigers hosts the Vikings in prime time at 7 p.m. as North Allegheny looks to remain undefeated and in first place in Section 1-6A.

The Big Macs beat the Blue Devils by three runs Monday, then cruised to a 12-run triumph Tuesday. The third game of the section series between the two South Hills rivals is at 4:15 p.m.

at Seymour Field in Mt. Lebanon. Softball runners-up collide There has been a lot of collateral damage both in the district and in the bigger scope of the entire state in Class 2A softball thanks to the incredible three-year run of dominance by Neshannock.

Two of those teams that had to settle for silver in their quest for gold because of the Lancers meet Thursday when Bentworth hosts Frazier. Last spring, the Bearcats lost to Neshannock in WPIAL Class 2A championship game, 3-0. Two years ago, the Commodores fell hard to the Lancers in the 2022 2A district title game, 9-1.

Following two years in Class A, Frazier moved back up to 2A this season. Currently in a tight chase in Section 4-2A, Frazier and Bentworth are in a four-way tie for first place with Brownsville and Waynesburg with section records of 2-1. The Commodores are 5-2 overall and just had a five-game winning streak halted with a section loss to Waynesburg on Monday, 5-4.

The Bearcats are 5-4 coming off a Tuesday section victory over Washington, 18-5. Volleyball midterms WPIAL boys volleyball has hit the midway point of the regular season with second-half matches beginning in earnest next week. There are two Class 2A section frays slated for Thursday, one to end the first half and another to get an early start on the second half.

In Section 1-2A, Deer Lakes (2-1) looks to secure second place at midseason, one game behind Derry, as the Lancers host Summit Academy (0-2). In Section 2-2A, North Catholic (3-1) also looks to remain one game behind first place Shaler when the Trojans visits Beaver County Christian (0-4). Big games with a stick There are a couple of key matches slated in WPIAL lacrosse on Thursday.

Two district girls lacrosse powers with a combined overall record this spring of 19-1 are set to collide when Mars visits Chartiers Valley at 7 p.m. The defending champion Fightin’ Planets are a perfect 8-0 on the season and 5-0 in Section 2-2A.

The 2024 district runner-up Colts are 7-0 in the section and 11-1 overall. CV has won 10 straight matches since suffering its only loss of the season to Class 3A Upper St. Clair in the second match of the year.

These programs have met twice in the WPIAL 2A girls lacrosse finals in the last three years. Chartiers Valley stunned then defending champion Mars in the 2022 title contest, 17-6. Last spring, the Fightin’ Planets got their revenge when they defeated the Colts in the finals, 14-6, to claim a second straight WPIAL title and the program’s third district crown in four years.

Elsewhere, Quaker Valley visits neighboring Sewickley Academy in a Section 2-2A boys lacrosse contest set for a 4:30 p.m. start at Nichols Field in Sewickley.

The host Panthers are 4-1 and the Quakers are 2-1 in section play..
